Remember Parker Lewis Can’t lose? I loved that show! Partly because it broke the rules.

Quite often Parker would speak TO the camera and thus break from the story to essentially address the fact that a story was being told. Conventionally in movies and television the audience is not addressed directly and is left to gain context from the story being told rather than being brought into the story; this streamlines the story.

It works when Parker Lewis does it or any number of other films and shows, which are almost alway comedy. It breaks the rules, and in art breaking the rules (intentionally) can be a good thing.
