The PR world of Mars Hill Church in Seattle got a fun ride this weekend started by a cease and desist letter to at least one groups of churches unrelated to Mars Hill Seattle bearing the same name.

On Friday a dear friend of mine, Mike Phillips, published a blog post regarding the letter on his blog more or less in a public plea to Mars Hill Seattle to go about this business in a more biblical way. Mike always brings a level head to the most heated issues and IĀ appreciateĀ his voice on my blog comments when I get into touchy thoughts. Likewise I appreciated his thoughts on the C&D issue and I quickly Tweeted the link. Little did I know how quickly this thing would blow up and how many nerves it struck. It turns out, other than Mike’s initial tweet, I was the first one to post it and it so happens that a large part of my community is one that would be interested in such things and they replied in kind with many re-tweets.

And just like that the court of public opinion was in session.

If you’re a leader in any size church you will eventually find yourself in a situation similar to the one Bill Hybels was in last week at the Global Leadership Summit (maybe not on this scale, but you get the idea). Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks, was scheduled to speak at the event and as it became public knowledge people began to protest the idea by threatening to boycot Starbucks because they consider Willow Creek and/or Bill Hybels to be ‘anti-gay’.
